How do I create an engaging Broadcast?

First: remember that your fans and followers already want to support you. Your Broadcast just gives them a financial incentive to do so. For a Broadcast to be engaging, it should have three main components:

  1. A clear topic. Anything from “My Daily Meditation,” to “Daily Bread Recipes” and “Atlanta Falcons Updates.” Whatever it is, you want to ensure that when a potential subscriber arrives on your landing page they know exactly what you are offering.
  2. Regular updates. The amount you text will depend on what topic you’re covering. The best way to be consistent with your updates is to set a cadence for yourself. A food influencer may send a daily recipe while a sports writer could post ten updates on game day and only 1 or 2 during the week. Whatever you choose, stick with it and if it doesn’t seem to be working, ask your subscribers what they would like to see you do differently.
  3. Exclusivity. Most of the people subscribing to your Broadcast are your top fans and followers - their raving review will be the fastest way you grow your audience. To convert them from “fans” to “evangelists,” you should provide them exclusive links and insights that demonstrate the value of your Broadcast. Make it very clear what you will be sharing in your Broadcast vs. what you will share on your pre-existing channels (i.e. how this will be different from Twitter, Instagram, etc...)

How do I grow my audience?

Growing a paid audience is hard. The best path to growing your audience is consistent, engaging posts. Outside of that, there are three basic steps you can follow below.

  1. Share your Broadcast with your followers wherever they are (email, Twitter, Instagram, etc...)
  2. Add your Broadcast link to your bio on social media.
  3. Ask your subscribers to share your Broadcast. Once you’ve built up an initial audience, it’s totally fine to ask your subscribers to share your work. Don’t spam them. But remember, they want to support you. After they’ve subscribed, the best support they can provide is getting their friends to do the same.

How should I style my updates?

Texting is an intimate medium. Subscribers will receive your messages next to texts from their family and friends. You should aim to write an update like you would a thoughtful Tweet. Use whatever voice and style is a best fit for you, but don’t start with “Dear ____” and sign off with “Thanks.” This is not an email. It is an informal yet insightful medium. Treat it as such.
